Prone to Addiction

In recent years, many studies suggest that the use of drugs like Alprazolam has been increasingly out of place and often misused. In European countries and America, the users that are mostly men who also drink alcohol are users of drugs known as benzodiazepines.

This is because people with a history of alcohol addiction (an alcoholic) are more likely to experience dependence and tolerance of this drug. That's why virtually every textbook that discusses the benzodiazepine class of a drugs to alleviate anxiety, always warns about the dangers of addiction in patients with a history of alcohol addiction. The ultimate example is the death of Whitney Houston.

To prevent this, it is suggested that if it is necessary to use a sedative, then it should be selected carefully, long term or short term. This is because long term sedation runs in the blood longer compared to the short term one. a Alprazolama, for example, will tend to make someone addicted compared to Diazepam (about ten times more).

Furthermore, the use of these drugs should be under the supervision or control of a doctor. Patients are not allowed to buy their own drugs, let alone take them without knowing the proper dosages. Although the sale of the benzodiazepine drugs has been tightened since 2009, in fact there are still many pharmacies that are willing to sell this type of drug purchase without a prescription.

The use of the smallest optimal dose and in a short time frame is also one way to avoid addiction of sedatives. Patients will usually be monitored in this type of drug use and doctor's advice must be considered properly. If you feel it is too long (more than 4 weeks), you can ask your doctor when you can stop taking the drugs.

Before ending this article I just want to emphasize again that in my personal opinion, reinforced by some papers in scientific journals and text books that I read, the use of sedatives in the benzodiazepine class is temporary and has a role as symptomatic drugs (reducing symptoms) in patients with anxiety and depression. Appropriate treatment for cases of depression and anxiety are not dependent on this type of drug.
